An emotionally, gripping masterpiece!

Released September 27th 2013 in Ireland, Prisoners comes from Oscar nominated director Denis Villeneuve and stars Oscar nominees Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in a story that poses the question: How far would you go to protect your family?

When Keller Dover’s (Jackman) six-year-old daughter, Anna, goes missing, together with her young friend, Joy, the emotional rollercoaster begins! Facing every parents worst nightmare and hours turning into days since they were last seen Dover, becomes more and more frustrated with the performance of the local police department. With the only clue of the disappearance being a beat up camper van that was seen near where the kids went missing, the investigation is headed up by Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) who sports a 100% record of solving every case he was ever assigned. Detective Loki finds the camper van in question and arrests its driver Alex Jones (Paul Dano), but a lack of evidence forces the only suspect’s release. Knowing his child’s life is at stake, the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. With scenes in the movie that made this buff wince at times, it sucks you in and you cant help but understand Dover’s cruel, severe and upsetting actions to get his little girl back. Dover’s actions display a religious undertone to the movie and that when his faith in God is tested, failing the test can lead to horrible consequences. There’s enough symbolism and religious themes to give Prisoners some weight. Although the movie is maybe 20-25 minutes longer then it should be and more of an emotional engagement on a personal level from Gyllenhaals character would have brought the movie to an untouchable plateau it is still fantastic! With career best performances in this reviewers opinion from Gyllenhaal and Jackman, this is a must see and again asks the question: How far would you go to protect your family? or perhaps more apt: How many moral and legal lines would you cross to get them back?
